core | the innermost zone of the earth. the core has two parts: a solid inner core and a molten outer core |
mantel | surrounding the core, made mostly of solid rock |
asthenosphere | the part of the mantel that lies just below the lithosphere (slowly flowing rock (in mantel)) |
lithosphere | a thin, rigid layer of rock, the outer most layer of the earth. contains the rigid upper mantel and the crust |
crust | solid surface of the earth |
tectonic plates | large broken pieces of lithosphere that move |
plate boundaries | the edge of the tectonic plates |
-convergent boundary | two plates are pushed toward each other, one of the plates will be pushed deep into the mantel |
divergent boundary | two plates are moving away from each other, causing a gap that can be filled wit magma, and when the magma cools, new crust is formed |
transform fault boundary | two plates slide from each other, also called transform boundaries |
volcanoes | mountains formed by magma from the earth's interior |
