Question | Answer |
Cells | basic unit of structure and function in living things |
Structure | what an organism is made of and how it is put together |
Function | processes that enable an organism to stay alive and reproduce |
Cell Theory | all living things are made of cells cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things all cells are produced from other cells |
Compound microscope | two lenses, one lens magnifies the other lens’ magnification (convex lens) |
Resolution | sharpness of an image |
Electrons microscope | uses a beam of electrons instead of light to produce a magnified image |
Organelles | tiny cell structures that carry out specific functions |
Cell Membrane | controls what substances go in and out of the cells |
Nucleus | control center of the cell |
Nuclear Envelope | membrane that protects the nucleus |
Chromatin | made up of DNA, lives inside the nucleus, the “blueprint” for what the cells are doing. Strands that contain genetic materials that instructs the cell how to grow |
Nucleolus | making ribosomes and protein. Where ribosomes are made. |
Cytoplasm | clear, thick, gel-like substance between cell membrane and nucleus |
Mitochondria | converting energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use. Known as “powerhouses” of cells. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum | the passageways carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another |
Ribosomes | small grain-like bodies that produce protein |
vacuole | a large water filler sac, stores food and other materials |
Golgi body | receives proteins and other materials and redistributes them to other parts of the cell |
Chloroplasts | captures energy and sunlight and use it to produce food in plant cells, NOT animal cells. |
Lysosome | “clean up crew” round structures containing chemicals that break down materials |
