line | Line: The path made by a moving point. |
3 directions of a line | Three directions of line: Diagonal, Vertical, Horizontal. |
diagonal line | Diagonal line: A slanted line |
vertical line | Vertical line: straight up and down (from top to bottom). |
horizontal line | Horizontal line: a straight line that runs side to side (left to right). |
parallel line | Parallel lines: two lines that run next to each other and never intersect. |
shape | Shape: An area that is made by a line that touches at the beginning and end. |
geometric shape | Geometric shape: A shape that fits into mathematics (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, etc.) |
organic shape | Organic shape: A shape that comes from nature and does not fit into mathematics. |
space | Space: Refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. |
perspective | the technique used to represent a three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface in a way that looks realistic and accurate, as we see it in nature. It is used to create an illusion of space and depth on a flat surface (or the picture plane). |
horizon line | Horizon Line: a horizontal line used to represent the horizon in a perspective drawing. |
vanishing point | Vanishing point: the single point at which all images vanish (in a perspective drawing) |
value | Value-- the relative darkness or lightness of a color. |
texture | Texture: The way something feels or appears to feel. |
form | Form: A three dimensional object (there is also implied form that uses value & shading to create what appears to be a three dimensional object) |
primary colors | Primary colors: Colors that cannot be made by mixing other colors; Red, Blue, Yellow. |
secondary colors | Secondary colors: Colors that are made by mixing two primary colors; Purple, Green, Orange. |
tertiary colors | Tertiary colors: colors that are made by mixing one primary and one secondary color. The colors tend to be grayish. The primary color is always listed first: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet. |
complimentary colors | Complimentary colors: colors that are straight across from each other on the color wheel. |
cool colors | Cool colors: Colors that have cool undertones: blues, purples, greens. |
warm colors | Warm colors: Colors that have warm undertones: reds, oranges, yellows. |
hue | Hue: The colors of the color wheel; a pure color without the addition of black, white, gray. |
monochromatic | Monochromatic: using one color in an image. |
grayscale | Grayscale-- a tool used to map out shadows, highlights, and mid-tones. |
hatching | Hatching-- creating tonal/shading effects by drawing parallel lines |
shadow/highlight | Shadow/Highlight-- visual dimension; adds realism and drama |
overhand | Overhand-- popular pencil hold |
tint | Tint-- Color with white added (making a hue lighter) |
tone | Tone-- Color with gray/black added (making a hue darker) |
