Question | Answer |
Rotation | Any object that is spinning on its axis. Ex: The spinning of Earth on its imaginary axis, which takes about 24 hours to complete and causes day and night to occur. |
Revolution | Any object that is circling another object. Ex: The Earth’s yearlong elliptical orbit around the Sun. |
Axis | A line that is drawn through the center of an object. Ex: The Imaginary vertical line that cuts through the center of Earth and around which Earth spins. |
Spring Tide | A line that is drawn through the center of an object. Ex: The Imaginary vertical line that cuts through the center of Earth and around which Earth spins. |
Neap Tide | A line that is drawn through the center of an object. Ex: The Imaginary vertical line that cuts through the center of Earth and around which Earth spins. |
Waxing | Describes phases following a new moon as more of the Moon’s lighted side becomes visible. (Add wax to make is shine) |
Waning | Describes phases that occur after a full moon, as the visible lighted side of the Moon grows smaller. (when you wane, it sounds like whine, and we want you to go away) |
Gibbous | This is when more than one quarter of the moon is visible, but it has not yet reached the full moon. |
Gravitational Attraction | The force of attraction between all masses in the universe. The force of the attraction increases as mass increases. Ex: The Sun’s pull on the Earth. |
Centrifugal Force | The explanation of an apparent outward pull that is experienced as an object travels in a circle. This is not a real force but the apparent outward pull is increased as mass, speed or distance from the center point increases. |
