Question | Answer |
problem | a question you want to solve using science |
research | what you already know or found out about the problem |
hypothesis | an educated guess or prediction about the outcome of an experiment. It may be stated as an if/then statement. |
prediction | a forecast about what will happen in an experiment based on past experiences and the evidence given |
experiment | the part of the scientific method used to test a hypothesis |
observation | information gathered through your five senses. For example, the moon is very bright tonight. |
data | the information you gather in an experiment |
results | the outcome on an experiment |
inference | using past experiences to draw conclusions about observations. Example: The moon will rise tonight. |
conclusion | the final answer to the problem in an experiment. The conclusion is based on the results of the experiment. |
variables | factors in an experiment that can change |
nonstandard units | a type of data that uses objects for measurements. For example using pennies or paper clips instead of a ruler to measure length. |
standard units | a type of data that uses customary or metric system for measurements. For example using a graduated cylinder to determine volume. |
