bradypnea | slower than normal respiratory rate; less than 10 breaths per minute |
cheyne-stokes respirations | periods of difficult breathing followed by periods of no respirations |
cyanosis | bluish color of the skin, nail beds, and/or lips due to low levels of oxygen in the blood |
diastolic pressure | measurement of blood pressure taken when the heart is at rest; measures constant pressure in arteries |
dyspnea | difficult or labored breathing |
febrile | pertaining to a fever (elevated body temperature) |
fever | elevated body temperature, usually 100 F or greater (37.8 C) |
homeostasis | a constant state of natural balance within the body |
hypertension | high blood pressure |
hyperthermia | condition that occurs when body temperature exceeds 104 F (40 C) |
hypotension | low blood pressure |
hypothermia | condition that occurs when body temperature is below normal, usually 95 F (35 C) |
orthopnea | severe dyspnea in which breathing is very difficult in any position other than sitting or standing |
palpation | the act of using the hands to feel body parts during an examination |
pulse | pressure of the blood felt against the wall of an artery as the heart contracts or beats |
pyrexia | fever |
rales | bubbling or noisy sound caused by fluid or mucus in the air passages |
respirations | the process of taking in oxygen (inspiration) and expelling carbon dioxide (expiration) by way of the lungs and air passages |
sphygmomanometer | instrument calibrated for measuring blood pressure in millimeter of mercury (mm Hg); blood pressure cuff |
stethoscope | instrument used for listening to internal body sounds |
systolic | measurement of blood pressure taken when the heart is contracting and forcing blood into the arteries |
tachycardia | faster than normal heartbeat; >100 bpm in adults |
tachypnea | respiratory rate > 25 breaths per minute in adults |
temperature | the measurement of the balance between heat lost and heat produced by the body |
wheezing | difficult breathing with a high-pitched whistling or sighing sound during expiration |
