Vocabulary Term | Definition |
Electron | a particle with a negative charge that moves in a cloud around the nucleus of an atom |
Neutron | a particle with no charge that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
Proton | a particle with a positive charge that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
Electron Cloud | area in which the electrons travel |
Matter | has mass and takes up space |
Elements | a substance that cannot be changed into a simpler substance |
Conductors | allow electricity and heat to flow through easily |
Nucleus | the central core of an atom where protons and neutrons are located |
Atoms | the smallest particle of an element that can exist and still keep the element's chemical properties |
Chemical Formula | an abbreviation for a compound, shows the type and number of atoms present in a compound |
Compound | formed when two or more elements chemically combine |
Chemical Bond | formed when elements combine and is a link between atoms |
Ion | an atom that has lost or gained at least one electron |
Molecule | made of two or more atoms, formed when atoms share electrons |
Dissolving | when a substance mixes evenly throughout another substance |
Solution | a mixture where the different parts mix together evenly |
Solvent | the substance in great quantity in a solution (usually water) |
Solute | the substance in lesser quantity (sugar, kool-aid) |
Mixture | contains two or more different substances that are not chemically joined |
Suspension | a type of mixture where the substances usually remain mixed for only a short time; particles do not dissolve |
