Question | Answer |
hypothesis | possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question |
experiment | the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation |
conclusion | a summary of the results of the experiment and a statement of how the results relate to the hypothesis |
observation | use of one or more of the senses to gather information |
problem | a question raised for consideration or solution |
scientific method | a series of steps followed to solve problems including collecting data, formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, and stating conclusions |
variable | something in an experiment that can change |
independent variable | Factor in an experiment that researchers manipulate so that they can determine its effect |
controlled variable | A variable that is not changed |
dependent variable | The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable. |
line graph | A graph that uses line segments to show changes that occur over time |
bar graph | a graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display data |
pie graph | a graph that best shows part of a whole |
control group | provides a normal standard against which the biologist can compare results of the experimental group |
experimental group | in an experiment, the group that receives the experimental treatment |
