Abiotic Factor | Any nonliving part of the enviroment, such as water, sunlight, temperature, and air. |
Biosphere | Part of Earth that supports life-the toppart of Earth's crust, all the waters covering Earth's surface, and the surrounding atmosphere; includes all biomes, ecosystem, communities, and populations. |
Biotic Factor | Any living or once-living organisim in the environment. |
Community | All of the populations of different species in a given area that interact in same way and depend on one another for food, shelter and other needs. |
Ecology | Study of all the interactions among organisims and their environment. |
Ecosystem | All of the communities in a given area and the the abiotic factors that affect them. |
Food Chain | Model that describes how energy in the form of food passes from one organism to another. |
Food Web | Model that describes how energy in the form of food moves through a community; a series of overlapping food chains. |
Habitat | Place where an organism lives. |
Limiting Factor | Any biotic or abiotic factor that limits the number of individuals in a population. |
Niche | Role of an organism in the ecosystem, including what it eats, how it interacts with other orgainsms and how it gets its food. |
Population | All of the members of one species that live in the same space at the same time. |
Population Density | Number of individuals in a population that occupies a definite area. |
Symbiosis | Any close relationship between species, including mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. |
Water Cycle | Model describing how water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back to the surface again through evaporation, condensation, and percipitation. |
