Federalism | A system of government that carries things out on a national level |
Separation of Powers | Government is divided into three equal branches: Judicial, Executive, Legeslative |
Checks and Balances | Each branch permits the other from becoming more powerful |
Judicial Review | Power of the courts to determine the constitutionality of the actions of the Executive and Legeslative branches. |
Representative Democracy | Public policies are made by officials who are selected by voters and held accountable to them in periodic elections |
Limited Government | Government is limited in what they may do. Each individual has certain rights that government cannot take away. |
Rule of Law | Government is bound by the fundamental law |
Individual Rights and Responsibilities | Rights: Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. Responsibilities: Voting, taxes, jury duty. |
Consent of the Governed | government can only operate if the people agree. Government can be altered. |
Majority Rule with the Rights of the Minority Protected | Majority wins votes, minority is still protected and respected. |
Popular Sovereignty | People are the only source of governmental power, the government must be conducted with the consent of the governed. |
Equal Protection of the Law | Everyone is equal under the law, it applies to everyone the same. |
