Heredity | The passing of traits (physical characteristics) from parent to offspring. Traits are controlled by genes. (Your dad doesn't pull his nose off his face and put it on your face. He passes on his genes for a particular trait, like nose shape. |
Genes | Contain coded information used to form a creature from a fertilized egg; a small part of a chromosome; made up of DNA. |
Dominant Gene | The gene that controls the trait. |
Recessive Gene | The gene that doesn't control the trait. |
Genotype | The genes a person has for a trait. For example, Br Br for eye color. (Br is the symbol for a gene for brown eyes.) |
Phenotype | The physical characteristic that a person has for a trait. (For example, Brown eyes.) |
Heterozygous | When a creature's genotype contains two different genes for a trait. (For example Br bl for eye color.) |
Homozygous | When a creature's genotype contains two of the same genes for a trait. (For example Br Br for eye color.) |
Traits | A physical characteristic. |
