catch per unit effort | The number of animals caught per unit of effort, such as the number of fish caught by fishing ship per day. It is used to estimate the population abundance of a species. |
global extinction | Occurs when a species can no longer be found anywhere on Earth. |
historical range of variation | The known range of an environmental variable such a the abundance o a species or the depth of a lake, over some past time interval.. |
local extinction | The disappearance of a species from part of its range, but continued persistence elsewhere. |
logistic carrying capacity | In terms of the logistic curve, the population size at which births equal deaths and there is no net change in the population. |
maximum sustainable yield | The maximum usable production of a biological resource that can be obtained in a specified time period without decreasing the ability of the population to sustain that level of production. |
minimum viable population | The minimum number of individuals that have a reasonable chance of persisting for a specified time period |
optimum sustainable population | The population that is in some way best for the population, its ecological community, its ecosystem, or the biosphere. |
time series | The set of estimates of some variable over a number of years |
