Question | Answer |
selectively permeable membrane | Lets some things into the cell, or out of the cell, but not others. |
diffusion | The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration of that type of molecule, to an area of low concentration of that type of molecule, without using energy, until equilibrium is reached. |
osmosis | The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane, such as a cell. |
Passive Transport | Transport that does not need energy. (Diffusion and osmosis are forms of Passive Transport.) |
endocytosis | The process of particles that are too large to move through the pores in the cell membrane entering the cell, using energy. |
exocytosis | The process of particles that are too large to move through the pores in the cell membrane exiting the cell, using energy. |
Active Transport | Transport that requires energy. Therefore it must be done by a cell. It is the opposite of diffusion. It is the movement of molecules from an area of low concentration of that type of molecule, to an area of high concentration of that type of molecule, |
Active Transport continued | across a cell membrane using energy. Equilibrium is never reached. (Endocytosis and exocytosis are forms of Active Transport.) |
Photosynthesis-What creature does it? | Plants and some single celled creatures. |
Photosynthesis-Where does it occur in the cell? | Chloroplasts or chlorophyll. |
Photosynthesis-What happens in words? | Turns Light Energy into Chemical Energy (sugar or starch). |
Photosynthesis-Other facts. | Photosynthesis is basically Cellular Respiration backwards. |
Photosynthesis-Chemical equations. | CO(2) {Carbon Dioxide} + H(2)O {Water} + LIght Energy > C(6)H(12)O(6) {Sugar} + O(2) {Oxygen} The numbers in the equation that are usually small are in parenthesis. |
Cellular Respiration-What creature does it? | All living things, including plants, every second of the day. |
Cellular Respiration-Where does it occur in the cell? | Mitochondria. |
Cellular Respiration-What happens in words? | Breaks down Cell Food (sugar or starch), using oxygen to produce energy for the cell. |
Cellular Respiration-Other facts. | Cellular Respiration is basically Photosynthesis backwards. |
Cellular Respiration-Chemical equations. | C(6)H(12)O(6) {Sugar} + O(2) {Oxygen} > CO(2) {Carbon Dioxide} +H(2)O {Water} +Energy. The numbers in the equation that are usually small are in parenthesis. |
Fermentation-What creature does it? | Some animals, some fungi, some single celled creatures. |
Fermentation-Where does it occur in the cell? | Cytoplasm. |
Fermentation-What happens in words? | Breaks down cell food (sugar or starch), without using oxygen, to produce energy for the cell. |
Fermentation-Other facts. | Fermentation produces 18x less energy than cellular respiration. |
Fermentation-Chemical equations. | C(6)H(12)O(6) {Sugar{ > Energy + alcohol or C(6)H(12)O(6) > Energy + Lactic Acid The numbers in the equation that are usually small are in parenthesis. |
