Angiosperm | flowering vascular plants that produce fruits containing one or more seeds |
Cambium | vascular tissue that produces xylem and phloem cells |
Cellulose | a chemical made out of sugar that makes up the cell walls of plants |
Cotyledon | part of a seed used for food storrage |
Cuticle | a waxy protective layer that covers the stems, leaves, and flowers of many plants to help prevent water loss |
Dicot | angiosperms with two cotyledons inside its seeds |
Guard Cells | pairs of cells that surround stomata and control their opening and closing |
Gymnosperm | vascular plants that don't produce flowers, usually have needle-like leaves, and produce seeds not protected by fruits |
Monocot | angiosperms with one cotyledon inside its seeds |
Nonvascular Plants | small plants that do not have tubes to carry water |
Palmate | leaf venation in which the veins of a leaf spread out like the fingers in your hand |
Parallel | leaf venation in which the veins of a leaf run parallel to each other |
Phloem | vascular tissue that forms tubes that carry disolved sugar throughout a plant |
Pinnate | leaf venation in which the leaf veins look like the veins in a feather |
Pioneer Species | first organisms to grow in a new area; break down rock to make soil for other species |
Rhizoid | threadlike structures that anchor nonvascular plants to the soil and absorb water |
Stoma/Stomata | small openings in the surface of most plant leaves that allow carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water to enter and exit |
Vascular Plant | plants with tube-like structures that carry water, sugar, and minerals throughout the plant |
Xylem | vascular tissue that forms tubes that carry water and minerals throughout the plant |
