stress | a force that acts on an area of rock to change its shape or volume |
tension | a type of stress that pulls on the crust |
compression | a type of stress that squeezes rock until it folds or breakes |
shearing | stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions |
fault | a break in the rock of the crust where rock surfaces slip past eachother. |

richer scale | assigns a magnitude number to an earthquake based on the size of siesmic waves. |
siesmograph | an instroment that records and measures siesmic waves. |
aftershocks | an earthquake that occures after a larger earthquake in the same area. |
tsunami | earthquakes that form a large wave from the water. |
