Question | Answer 1 |
scientific method | The process by which scientists improve their understanding of the universe. |
physical science | The study of matter and energy interactions, chemistry and physics. |
chemistry | The study of the forms, structure, interactions and reactions of matter |
hypothesis | A more or less new idea which needs more data or experimental repetition. An educated guess, based on known evidence, to answer a question or problem |
variable | A factor that influences a system |
experimental variable | manipulated or changed intentionally between set-ups |
controlled variable | not allowed to change from one set up to another |
responding variable | changes as a result of changing the experimental variable |
data | They are facts collected using the scientific method. They are not explanations. They can be measurements or descriptions of anything you noticed while doing an experiment. |
unit | A standard quantity used to make measurements comparable. Exs. grams or meters |
metric system | A decimal system of units. The naming is based on powers of ten like our decimal system, so converting within the system requires no math. |
significant digits | the digits from a measurement or calculation that can be reported because they correctly represent the level of precision of the tool and accuracy of the scientist. |
accuracy | how correctly an action is done (depends on the person) |
precision | how small an interval a measurement tool is capable of measuring |
estimation | making a reasonable guess to about where a pointer is pointing between the two closest lines on a scale. |
theory | A set of principles used to explain and/or make predictions about phenomena |
scientific law | A formula or formal statement of a phenomena observable within specified conditions which has not been disproved after many experiments and much debate |
physics | The study of energy, forces, and motion of objects. |
technology | The application of science to create a product. It is also used to mean a product of science. |
