What is gamekeeper's thumb? How would you test for this? | A tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. Hold the pt's thumb in extension, and apply a valgus force (move thumb toward index finger). Positive test: Excessive valgus movement. (compare to contralateral side) |
What is the Allen test (at the wrist) used for? Describe it. | Tests for vascular insufficiency. Pt opens and closes hand several times in succession, then makes a fist and holds it. PT compresses radial and ulnar arteries and pt relaxes hand. PT releases pressure on one artery. Positive test: Delayed color return. |
Describe the capillary refill test. | Therapist compresses pt's nailbed, and after releasing the pressure, notes how long it takes for color to return to the nail. Positive test: Delayed response of greater than 2 seconds. |
