What is the Allen test (at the wrist) used for? Describe it.Tests for vascular insufficiency. Pt opens and closes hand several times in succession, then makes a fist and holds it. PT compresses radial and ulnar arteries and pt relaxes hand. PT releases pressure on one artery. Positive test: Delayed color return.
Describe the capillary refill test.Therapist compresses pt's nailbed, and after releasing the pressure, notes how long it takes for color to return to the nail. Positive test: Delayed response of greater than 2 seconds.
