Scientific Processes | includes various methods and procedures that scientist use to answer questions and solve problems |
Observations | when you gather information using any of your five senses |
Hypothesis | a statement that can be tested by conducting a controlled experiment |
Controlled Experiment | an investigation that test only one factor at a time |
Variable | a factor that changes during an investigation |
Control | a variable that a scientist keeps the same throughout an investigation |
Independent Variable | the factor that a scientist changes during an investigation |
Dependent Variable | the change that occurs in response to a change in the independent variable |
Data | observations or measurements that are made during a controlled experiment |
Qualitative data | types of information by observations, and can be explained with words |
Quantitative data | types of information by observations, and can be explained with numbers |
Organize Data | data put into charts, tables or graphs |
Analyze | to interpret and evaluate data be breaking it down into its elements |
Conclusion | a data based decision to accept or reject a hypothesis |
Inference | a logical conclusion based on evidence |
Evidence | proof or information on which a conclusion can be based |
Extrapolate | to estimate or infer data beyond a given set of data |
Prediction | a statement about what will happen in the future; educated guess. |
Communicate results | to share your results of experiments with others around the world |
Model | a representation of an object or a system |
Analogy | a comparison between two similar things or events |
Ratio | the relationship between two quantities |
Scale Model | the size of the model parts are in consistent ratio to the sizes of the parts in the real object |
Limitation | a restriction on the usefulness of a model |
Theory | a widely accepted scientific explanation for something that happens in nature |
Bias | an opinion or a point of view that is highly personal based on a belief that is not supported by evidence |
Reproducibility | describes how alike the results of an experiment are when reproduced by different scientists using the same method and substance |
Claim | a statement about what a product can do |
Empirical evidence | evidence acquired through direct observation in a controlled experiment |
Skepticism | an attitude of questioning or doubt |
Critical thinking | includes analyzing, reviewing, and critiquing explanations you come across before you accept the explanation as fact |
