intergenerational mobility | (up/down) change in status of family members from one generation to the next. |
Caste System | A closed stratum system where boundaries are very clearly drawn and very difficult to change. A persons position tends to be determined at birth by race etc. Life Long (ascribed) |
Class system | an open stratum system where te boundaries are flexible and people can change their position through effort or failuer. your position is the same as your family but changeable. Linked to personal achievement |
Intragenerational mobility | The status changes during a persons lifetime. movement from one occupation to another. |
sex | the biological distinction between male/female |
gender | the personal traits and social positions that members of society attatch to being male/female. |
nonconcious ideology | beliefs that are so ingrained we can't fathom other concepts. we don't know we have these beliefs until an alternative appears |
homophobia | the irrational fear/hatred of homosexuals |
androgyny | the idea that all people have bot masculine and feminine attributes |
misogyny | the cultural devauluation and/or hatred of women as well as those tings associated with femaninity |
total institution | a setting in whic people are isolated from te rest of society and manipulated by the administrative staff |
anticipatory socialization | learning that helps a person achieve a desired position |
resocialization | radically changing an inmates personality by carefully controlling the environment |
gender stratification | the unequal distribution of power, wealth, and privilege between men and women |
