Orbit | The path followed by an object in space as it moves around another |
Revolution | One complete orbit of one object around another |
Axis | A line around which an object turns |
Rotation | One complete turn of an object around it's axis |
Low Latitudes | The region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn |
High Latitudes | The region inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles |
Middle Latitudes | The regions between the Tropic of Cancer, and the Arctic Circle and between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle |
Landform | A type of shape of land such as a mountain or a plain |
Mountain | A landform that rises more that 2,000 ft above sea level and tapers to a peak. |
Hill | A landform that sits above the land around it, but is not very tall |
Plateau | An area of mostly flat land that rises above the surrounding land |
Plain | An area of mostly flat or rolling land with few tall plants such as trees |
Plate Tectonics | The theory that the Earth's crust is made up of several pieces that shift around |
Plate | A section of the Earth's Crust that moves slowly |
Weathering | The breaking down of rocks by wind rain, or other forms of precipitation |
Erosion | The process in which the elements slowly wear away and remove land |
Atmosphere | The band of gasses surrounding a planet |
Weather | The condition of the atmosphere at one location at one specific time |
Temperature | The measure of how hot or cold a substance is |
Precipitation | Any form of water falling down on earth from clouds |
Climate | The average weather patterns in an area over time |
Why is the sun important to planets in the solar system? | It provides warmth and light for all of the planets, as well as a path for them to follow in order that they might not fly off in an undetermined path. |
