libel | writing something about someone that damages their reputation |

ombudsman | an official advocate appointed to investigate and address complaints to improve care or conditions reported by individuals in medical facilities |
advance directive | document expressing a person’s wishes about critical care when he or she is unable to decide for him or herself, but does not authorize anyone to act on that person’s behalf or make decisions for them as a living will does |
living will | document stating what measures should or shouldn’t be taken to prolong life, appoints a representative for making decisions if a person becomes too ill to decide, is in a coma, or is certain to die |
AMA | against medical advice (A physician’s order is usually required before a patient can be discharged from a facility) |
DNR | do not resuscitate a request not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if your heart stops or if you stop breathing) |
POA | Power of Attorney (permits an individual to make decisions for you if you are unable) |
PSDA | Patient Self Determination Act (requires federally funded healthcare agencies to inform patients of the right to make decisions regarding their care, to offer assistance in preparing advance directives, and to not discriminate based on advance directives) |
HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (includes strict standards for maintaining confidentiality of health care records) |
