Homeostasis | Allowing the family system to adapt in a controlled way to change; is dynamic rather than static. |
Social roles | Ackerman regards them as "semipermeable membranes" that allow interactions in both directions between the person and the environment. |
Role complementarity | They must allow for mutural support, dependence, and intimacy among familly members and allow family members to accommodate to new experiences. |
Conflict | While it can occur at any level (e.g., within an individual or between family memberms) it eventually affects the entire family system. |

Prejucicial scapegoating | One family member is singled out and blamed for the family's problems, resulting in the adoption of specific roles by other family members |

Techniques | The process takes place in stages and requires the therapist to adopt a wide range of roles including activator, challenger, confronter, supporter, interpreter, and integrator. |
