Term | Definition |
Science | The knowledge obtained by observing natural events and conditions in order to discover facts and formulate laws that can be tested. |
Observation | The process of obtaining information by using the senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and sometimes taste. |
Scientific Method | A series of steps followed to solve a problem. |
Hypothesis | An explanation that is based on prior scientific research or observations and that can be tested. |
Data | Any information received through observations or experimentation. |
Model | A pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept. |
Meter | The basic unit of length in the SI. (Metric system) |
Area | A measure of the size of a surface or a region. |
Mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object. |
Volume | A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space. |
Temperature | A measure of how hot or cold something is. |
Variable | Any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. |
Control or Constant | A variable that cannot be changed or is purposely not changed during the experiment. |
Independent Variable | The independent variable is the one that is changed by the scientist. |
Dependent Variable | The dependent variables are the things that the scientist focuses his or her observations on to see how they respond to the change made to the independent variable. |
