Hominid | Type of primate characterized by bipedalism, relatively longer lower limbs, and lack of a tail; ex. humans and their ancestors. |
Sedimentary rock | Types of rock that are formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. |
Primate | Type of mammal characterized by opposable thumbs and binocular vision. |
Homo sapiens | The species of hominids that included modern humans and their closest ancestors, and that first appeared about 100,000 to 150,000 years ago. |
Cenozoic Era | The current geological era, which began 65.5 million years ago; also called the Age of Mammals. |
Geologic Time Scale | The standard method used to divide the Earth's long natural history into manageable parts. |
Adaptation | A behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to survive or reproduce in its environment. |
Precambrian Time | The interval of time in the geologic time scale from Earth's formation to the beginning of the Paleozoic era, from 4.6 billion to 542 million years ago. |
Mesozoic Era | The geologic era that lasted from 251 million to 65.5 million years ago; also known as the Age of Reptiles. |
Paleozoic Era | The geologic era that followed the Precambrian Time and that lasted from 542 million to 251 million years ago. |
Species | A group of organisms that are closely related and can breed together. |
Natural selection | A process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than others of the same species. |
Paleontologist | A scientist that studies fossils. |
Fossil record | A historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the Earth's crust. |
Selective breeding | The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits. |
Fossil | The trace or remains of an organism that lived long agao, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock. |
