heredity | the passing of traits from parents to offspring |
genetics | the science of heredity |
gene | the section of DNA that codes for one specific trait |
Gregor Mendel | the Father of generics |
trait | characteristics such as leaf shape or eye color that are passed from parent to offspring |
dominant trait | a genetic trait that expresses itself more strongly that another trait |
recessive trait | a genetic trait that is hidden by a dominant trait |
Punnett square | a tool that shows how genes can combine; used to predict the results of genetic crosses |
homozygous | an organism with two identical units for a trait |
heterozygous | an organism with two identical units for a trait |
hybrid | an organism with a dominant unit and a recessive unit for a trait |
phenotype | the external appearance of an organism |
genotype | the genetic makeup of an organism |
incomplete dominance | a condition where two units (genes) for a trait are both expressed (example: read and white flowers produce pink flowers) |
Human Genome Project | a project designed by scientists around the world to map the location of every gene on all the human chromosomes |
allele | the different forms of a gene |
asexual reproduction | the reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent |
sexual reproduction | the reproductive process that involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents |
