Mandible | Lower jawbone; hinged to help you chew your food |
Clavicle | Collarbone; connects the sternum to the scapula at your shoulder joint; connects arms to ribs |
Scapula | Shoulder blade; connects arms to ribs; back of rib cage |
Ribs | Rib cage; protection for lungs, heart, liver, stomach as well as major blood vessels; attached to the vertebrae in the back & sternum in the front; 12 pair |
Sternum | Flat bone attaching most of the ribs in the front of the chest; gives solid protection to center of chest & internal organs |
Humerus | Supports our arms; “funny” bone; gives the ability to pick things up |
Radius | Lower arm bone attaching the thumb to the humerus bone; swivels over the ulna for arm movement |
Ulna | Lower arm bone attaching the pinky finger to the humerus bone; swivels with the radius for arm movement |
Phalanges (hand bones) | gives you the ability to pick up small things; connects to the radius & ulna at wrist joint; very flexible |
Vertebrae | 33 individual bones connected with ligaments & separated by cartilage disks; provides you the ability to move, bend, stretch, twist; protects the nerves of the spinal cord |
Pelvis | Holds the femur in the ball & socket joint at hip; supports vertebrae and allows large movements-bending at waist; protects internal organs |
Femur | This is the largest & strongest bone in your body; connects to pelvis and the patella; supports & holds your body upright |
Patella | Kneecap; protects the knee joint and connects femur to fibula & tibia |
Tibia | Shin bone; front, larger lower leg bone; connects at the patella & the phalanges |
Fibula | Back, smaller lower leg bone; connects at the patella & the phalanges |
Phalanges (foot bones) | Supports the weight of your body & allows for movement; connects to leg at the ankle joint; very flexible |
Joints | where bones come together |
Tendons | attach muscle to bone (Tall Muscular Body) |
Ligaments | attach bone to bone (Lazy Bone Body) |
Ball & Socket Joint | allows movement in many directions ~ at shoulders & hips |
Hinge Joint | allows movement toward & away from another bone/one direction only ~ at knee |
Pivot Joint | allows rotation ~ at neck |
Gliding Joint | allows flat bones to glide over one another ~ at wrists & ankles |
Saddle Joint | Moves back & forth over another ~ at thumb |
