globe | a 3-D model of the earth |
sphere | a ball-shaped object; a round, solid figure |
continent | large, continuous land masses that are surrounded by oceans |
ocean | very large bodies of salt water that separate continents |
North Pole | the place farthest north on Earth with a latitude of 90 degrees N, where all lines of longitude converge |
South Pole | the place farthest south on Earth with a latitude of 90 degrees S, where all lines of longitude converge; exactly opposite of the North Pole |

hemisphere | half of a sphere |
Arctic Circle | a line of latitude that lies at 66 degrees north of the Equator, 1 of the 5 major lines of latitude that mark the globe |
Antarctic Circle | a line of latitude that lies at 66 degrees south of the Equator, 1 of the 5 major lines of latitude that mark the globe |
Equator | an imaginary line on a map or globe halfway between the North & South Poles, splitting the earth into the northern & southern hemispheres; the Equator is almost 25,000 miles around and is the latitude line 0 degrees. |
Prime Meridian | the line of longitude drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole at zero degrees |
International Date Line | a line of longitude on a map/globe drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole, following 180 degrees, but turning and twisting to miss bodies or land; it is where the days of the week change. |
Tropic of Cancer | line of latitude located at 23.5 degrees north of the Equator; 1 of the 5 major lines of latitude that mark the globe |
Tropic of Capricorn | line of latitude located at 23.5 degrees south of the Equator; 1 of the 5 major lines of latitude that mark the globe |
latitude | also known as "parallels", these imaginary lines run east to west, but measure distance north or south of the Equator |
longitude | also know as "meridians", these imaginary lines run north to south, but measure distance east to west of the Prime Meridian |
