system | Any collection of interacting parts that work together to make a whole or produce a function. |
interacting | Act in a way as to have an effect on something else. |
subsystem | A system that is a part of a larger system. |
geosphere | Earth's core, mantle and crust. |
atmosphere | The layer of gases surrounding Earth. |
hydrosphere | The interacting water on, under and above Earth's surface. |
biosphere | A system of interacting living organisms on Earth. |
ecosystem | A community of organisms interacting with one another and with nonliving factors in an area. |
producer | An organism that makes its own food. |
consumer | An organism that cannot make its own food. Eats other organisms. |
decomposer | Organism that breaks down plant and animal material into simple chemicals. |
energy | What cells need to work. |
carnivores | Animals that eat other organisms. |
herbivores | Animals that eat plants. |
omnivores | Animals that eat plants and animals. |
bacteria | Microorganism that is a decomposer. |
compost | Decaying organic material. |
red worm | Species of earthworm that has adapted to decaying organic material. |
dormancy | A period in an organisms life cycle when growth, development and physical activity are temporarily stopped. |
carbon dioxide | A waste gas produced during cellular respiration. Plants use carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to make food. |
cell | The basic unit of life |
fungus | An organism that lacks chlorophyll and gets nutrients from dead or living organisms. |
metabolism | When an organism uses nutrients for energy and produces waste products. |
yeast | A microscopic fungus consisting of single oval cells that are capable of converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. |
photosynthesis | A process used by plants and algae to make sugar (food) out of light, carbon dioxide and water. |
chlorophyll | A molecule that absorbs red and blue light and reflects green light. |
digestion | the process of breaking down food into nutrients that can be used by cells |
digestion system | The organs and structures that digest food. The digestive system includes the teeth, mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and colon . |
parallel | describing a leaf in which several veins start at one point near the base. The veins look like the fingers of a hand. |
pinnate | describing a leaf that has one main vein with smaller veins branching off sideways from it. |
palmate | describing a leaf in which several veins start at one point near the base. The veins look like the fingers of a hand. |
xylem | the hollow cells of a plant that transport water and minerals to pant cells |
phloem | The long cells through which nutrients, such as sugars, are distributed in a plant. |
vascular bundles | the group of xylem and phloem tubes in a vascular plant. |
