food chain | a series of plants and animals, in which plants are eaten by some animals, who are then eaten by other animals |
carnivore | an animal that eats meat (other animals) |
prey | animal that is hunted, caught, and eaten by a predator |
camouflage | the ability to blend in with the surroundings |
predator | an animal that hunts and eats other animals |
adaptations | special body part or ability of an animal or plant that helps it survive |
omnivore | an animal that eats animals AND plants |
habitat | the place where an animal or plant lives |
secondary consumer | an animal that eats another animal in a food chain |
producer | scientific word for a plant (because it can produce its own food) |
herbivore | an animal that eats only plants |
food web | overlapping food chains |
primary consumer | the first "eater" in a food chain (always an herbivore) |
instinct | something that an animal (or human) does automatically (without having to learn it) |
nutrients | substances needed in order for plants and animals to grow and live |
decomposer | an organism that feeds on dead plants and animals and returns their nutrients to the soil by going to the bathroom |
