Term | Definition |
Joints | The place where two or more bones meet. |
Ball and Socket Joint | The ball shaped head of one bone moves inside the cup shaped socket of the other. The joint can move in all directions. |
Hinge Joint | This joint moves only moves in one direction, like a door hinge. |
Gliding Joint | One part of a bone glides over another bone allowing a small range of sideways movement. |
Pivot Joint | The end of one bone rotates inside a ring formed by another. The joint can move up and down and from side to side. |
Tendons | - Joins muscles to bones and muscles to muscles |
Ligaments | - Connects bones to other bones at the joints |
Cartilage | - Strong, flexible tissue that allows joints to move easily, cushions bones, and supports soft tissue. |
Skeletal Muscles | - Attached to bones (voluntary) |
Smooth Muscles | - In walls of organs such as stomach, intestines, and bladder (involuntary) |
Cardiac | - In the heart (involuntary) |
