atom | (noun) a particle that is the smallest basic unit of matter |
chemical property | (noun) a special characteristic of a substance that describes how it reacts with another substance. |
compound | (noun) a substance that contains 2 or more different elements chemically bonded together. An example is water. |
element | (noun) a substance that contains only one kind of atom. There are 92 elements that occur naturally. An example is iron. |
matter | (noun) anything that has mass and takes up space; anything with mass and volume. |
mixture | (noun) 2 or more substances that have been mixed together, but each substance still has its original characteristics. An example is mixing Cheerios and paper clips together. |
molecule | (noun) a particle of matter that has 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together. The atoms can be the same or different. |
particle | (noun) a tiny bit of something |
physical property | (noun) a special characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance (example - color, density, etc.) |
property | (noun) any special characteristic of a substance that can be used to identify that substance. |
pure substance | (noun) a substance that contains only one kind of particle. An element and a compound are both pure substances. |
