Term | Definition |
Diffusion | Movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration. It will eventually even out. |
Plasma membrane | A flexible boundary between the cell and it's environment. (This also is called cell membrane) |
Selective Permeability | Is accomplished by the size of the molecules and the structure of the membrane. |
Cell wall | Is a rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection. Found in plant cells, not animal cells! |
Nucleus | Contains DNA, blueprint or instructions manual and it also manages cellular functions (protects DNA) |
Nucleolus | Is the large dark structure inside of the nucleus. This structure produces ribosomes. |
Ribosomes | Produces proteins based on the instructions from the DNA. (DNA is found inside the nucleus) |
Cytoplasm | Is a clear, gelatinous fluid inside of the cell. Helps to move materials around the cell and also helps move waste products. (Keeps everything in place) |
(er) Endoplasmic Reticulum | Synthesizes (makes) either proteins or lipids (fats) (depending on the part of the reticulum.) Folded on top of itself. Folding allows the organelle to have more surface and take up less space. The more surface the more area to create proteins or lipids ( |
Rough (er) endoplasmic reticulum | (RER) creates proteins. It appears "rough" because of all the ribosomes attached to it. (Think sandpaper) |
Smooth (er) endoplasmic reticulum | (SER) creates lipids (fats). It appears "smooth" because there are no ribosomes attached to it. (Remember slippery and smooth) |
