Factor | Reason |
1. Latitiude | closer to the equator influences how warm it is. Closer to one of the poles (north or south) influences how cold it is. |
2. Ocean Currents | Canada is affected by 3 currents. (Alaska, Labrador and the gulf of mexico) These currents bring warming or cooling effects in predictable patterns. EX icebergs |
3. Wind and Air masses | The weight of the air is called pressure. When pockets of different air pressure meet wind is created |
4. Elevation | air cools in temperature and rises in height. Eventually it releases moisture if cold enough. The rate of cooling is 1 degree drop per every 100m you go higher |
5. Relief (height of land) | Different sides of a mountain get different forms of weather |
6. Nearness to water | Large bodies of water (like oceans and lakes) influence climate. Keeps our winters milder and summers cooler. |
