Term | Definition |
molecule | The smallest piece of matter that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
chemical bond | An attraction between atoms that allows the formation of chemical substances. |
chemical formula | A representation of the molecules that combine in order to create compounds. It shows the number of protons of each element in the formula. |
compound | A chemical substance created by the chemical bonds of two or more different elements. |
element | A substance made up of atoms which all have the same number of protons, or the same atomic number. They are chemically the simplest substances and hence cannot be broken down using chemical methods. |
chemical reaction | The result/aftermath of a chemical experiment. |
reactant | A material that undergoes change during a chemical reaction. |
product | A substance formed as the result of a chemical reaction. |
cross-link | A bond that links one polymer chain to another. |
monomer | The connecting molecule that links the molecules of a polymer together. |
polymer | A large molecule composed of many repeated subunits. |
open system | A system that can freely exchange matter and energy with its surroundings. |
closed system | A system that cannot exchange matter and energy with its surroundings. |
Law of Conservation of Mass | A scientific law that states that while matter can be changed from one form into another, mixtures can be separated or made, and pure substances can be decomposed, the total amount of mass will not change. |
