Term | Definition |
Ecology | the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment |
Biotic | these are all the living organisms on earth. |
Abiotic | these are all the nonliving factors of the environment |
Organism | any living thing with one or more cells. |
Habitat | the area where an organism lives its life including the living and nonliving factors. |
Population | all the individuals of the same species that live together in one place at the same time. |
Community | all the populations of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other. |
Ecosystem | populations and abiotic factors with which they interact in the setting of a community. |
Biosphere | the part of the earth where life exists. |
Producer | this is an organism that supplies matter and energy, also known as an autotroph. |
Consumer | this is an organism that relies on other organisms for its food and energy supply; also called a heterotroph. |
Decomposer | this is an organism that breaks down and gains nutrients from dead organisms. |
Herbivore | an organism that eats only plants. |
Cornivore | an organism that only eats animals. |
Omnivore | an organism that eats both plants and animals. |
Food Chain | the pathway of energy transfer through various stages as a result of feeding patterns of a series of organisms. |
Food Web | a diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. |
Energy Pyrimad | a triangular diagram that shows an ecosystem’s loss of energy, which results as energy passes through the ecosystem’s food chain. |
