Term | Meaning |
absolute monarchy | a type of government in which a king or queen's word is law |
constitutional monarchy | a limited monarchy that has constituional checks upon the ruler |
direct democracy | a democracy in which the people have a direct voice and vote in the government |
representantive democracy | a democracy in which people select delegates or substitutes to represent them |
oligarchy | a type of government in which a small group of people rule |
totalitarianism | an extreme type of dictatorship that controls the political, economic, and social life of a country |
plurality | the greatest number of votes in an election |
simple majority | 50 percent of the votes plus a minimum of one vote |
electoral college | a special group of voters from each state that elects the president and vice president |
federal system | the shareing of power between the states and the central government |
checks and balances | a system among the branches of the federal government that prevents any one branch from dominating the other two |
Bill of Rights | the first ten amendments to the U. S. Constitution that state and freedoms and rights of individuals |
veto | the presidential power to refuse to sign into law a bill that has been approved by Congress; can be overridden by Congress |
judicial review | the power of the Supreme Court to rule on the constitutionality of laws |
referendum | the process by which voters can approve or reject legislation |
recall | a procedure that permits voters to remove an elected offical from office before his or her term over |
treaties | formal agreements among nations |
