Term | Definition |
Measure | Small segments that music is broken into according to the time signature. A measure is marked my barlines. |
Barline | Vertical lines that break up the staff. A single barline indicates the end of a measure while a double bar line indicates the end of the music. |
Time Signature | The symbol in music that tell the musician how many beats are in each measure and what type of note makes up one beat. |
Whole note | 4 beats |
Half note | 2 beats |
Quarter note | 1 beat |
Eighth note | 1/2 beat |
Sixteenth note | 1/4 beat |
Quarter rest | 1 beat |
Musical clef | A clef is a musical symbol used to indicate the pitch and range of the written notes. It is placed on one of the lines at the beginning of the staff, it indicates the name and pitch of the notes on that line. |

Mezzo piano(mp) | Medium soft |
Mezzo forte(mf) | Medium loud |
Forte(f) | Loud |

Crescendo | Gradually getting louder |
Decrescendo | Gradually getting softer |
Staccato | A dot above or below a note head indicates a staccato playing or singing of a note. Staccato means short and separated. |
Legato | A long line above or below notes, as seen here, indicates that notes should be played or sung legato. Legato means smooth and connected. |
Tempo | How fast or slow music is played or sung. |
Cannon | A musical form in which voices all sing the same melody, but each begin at different times. This is known as a round when each part is continuously repeated. |
Unison | When voices simultaneously sing the same words, notes and rhythms. |
Harmony | Pleasing combination of two or more notes sung together which support the melody. |
A Cappella | Singing without instrumental accompaniment |
Soprano | A higher female voice, or high unchanged male voice |
Alto | A lower female voice or a lower unchanged male voice |
Cambiata | A changing voice, or a boy's voice that is in the process of changing. |
Head voice | The part of your voice used for producing higher vocal sounds,you upper register. |
Chest voice | The part of your voice for producing lower sounds, your lower register. |
