Question | Answer |
FORCE | The quantity that is determined by mass x acceleration (F=ma) |
FRICTION | The force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other. |
WEIGHT | A body's relative mass or the quantity of matter contained by it. |
SPEED | The distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. |
VELOCITY | An object's speed and direction at a given time. |
ACCELERATION | A change in the direction or velocity of an object over time. Acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s squared |
SLIDING FRICTION | Occurs when two solid surfaces slide over each other. |
ROLLING FRICTION | Occurs when an object rolls on a surface. |
STATIC FRICTION | Acts between objects that are not in motion. |
FLUID FRICTION | Occurs when a solid object moves through a fluid. |
WORK | Done when a force that is applied to an object moves that object. |
POWER | Energy that is produced by mechanical, electrical, or other means and used to operate a device. |
GRAVITY | A force that pulls objects towards each other. |
ENERGY | Power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources. |
KINETIC ENERGY | Energy of an object in motion. |
POTENTIAL ENERGY | Stored energy due to its position. |
ALTITUDE | The height of an object above sea level. |
WEATHER | The current state of the atmosphere. |
ATMOSPHERE | A blanket of air and gases that surround a planet. |
WATER VAPOR | A gas in the atmosphere that is made of tiny water droplets and is invisible. |
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM | A collection of radiation that includes visible light, X-rays, UV rays, gamma rays, infrared radiation, and radio waves. |
GREENHOUSE EFFECT | The trapping of the Sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface. |
SCATTERING | The process in which electromagnetic radiation or particles are deflected. |
OPTICAL TELESCOPE | Telescopes that collect and focus visible light by using lenses and mirrors. |
NONOPTICAL TELESCOPE | Telescopes that examine light from the sky at wavelengths other than those of visible light. |
PARALLAX | The effect in which the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions. |
LIGHT YEAR | The distance light travels in a single year.(9.4605284 x 10 e12) |
PENUMBRA | Partial view of an eclipse shadow. |
UMBRA | Full and darkest part of an eclipse shadow |
EQUINOX | The days when day and night are of equal length. They occur twice a year (Mar. 20 and Sept. 22) |
SOLSTICE | The days when the Sun appears farthest north at noon. They are the longest and shortest days of the year and occur twice each year. (Dec. 21 and June 21) |
