electrical charge | a property of matter that tells whether something has a positive or negative charge. Something with a positive electrical charge will repel an object with the same property |
static electricity | a buildup of electrical charge on an object. Objects rubbing against one another in a clothes dryer create static electricity |
discharge | a release of electrical energy from one object to another. Static electricity will discharge from a charge object to a lesser charged object |
conductor | a material through which heat or electricity flows easily. Metals such as copper and silver are good conductors. |
insulator | Something that slows or stops the flow of energy, such as heat, electricity, or sound. Wood, rubber, and glass are good insultors |
How did electrical charges interact? | Electrical charges can be negative or positive. Opposite charges attract each other. Like charges repel each other. |
What is an electrical discharge? | An electrical discharge is the movement of a buildup of electrical charge from one object to another. This buildup of electrical charge on an object is called static electricity. |
What are two of static electricity? | Some examples of static electricity are lightning, rubbed balloons, shocks when a doorknob or light switch, hair standing on end after combing or brushing, and sparks when touching a sweater. |
