Term | Definition |
Medicine | a substance that when taken into or applied to the body helps prevent or cure some disease, injury, or medical problem |
Vaccine | a preparation containing weakened or dead pathogens of a particular disease given to prevent one from contracting that disease |
Pharmacist | a person concerned with the preparation, distribution and sale of medicines |
Drug | dangerous and often illegal substance, including alcohol and tobacco |
Additive interaction | when medicines work together in a positive way |
Synergistic effect | the interaction of two or more medicines that results in a greater effect than when the medicines are taken independently |
Antagonistic interaction | when the effect of a medicine is reduced or cancelled when taken with other medicine |
Tolerance | a state when the body becomes used to the effect of a medicine or drug and requires larger doses of that medicine/drug to produce the same effect |
Withdrawal | the state when a person stops taking a medicine to which he/she is physiologically dependant: symptoms include nervousness, insomnia, severe nausea, headaches, vomiting, chills and cramps |
Medicine misuse | using a medicine in a way that is not intended |
