solid | a matter with definite shape and volume |
liquid | a matter with definite volume, but no definite shape |
gas | matter with no definite shape or volume |
thermal energy | the total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a sample of matter |
heat | movement of thermal energy from a substance at a higher temperature to one at a lower temperature |
melting point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to liquid |
freezing point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to solid |
vaporization | the change from a liquid to gas |
condensation | the change from a gas to liquid |
Pressure | equal to the force exerted on a surface divided by the total area over which the force is exerted |
buoyant force | the difference in pressure results in an upward force on an object immersed in a fluid |
Archimedes Principle | the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object |
Density | mass divided by volume |
Pascal's Principle | when a force is applied to a confined fluid, an increase in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of fluid |
Energy | the ability to cause change |
