urban (or suburban) sprawl | the expansion of a city's borders primarily for residential expansion; the spread of homes and businesses across land that could have been used for other purposes |
land-use planning | involves determining, in advance, where people will live, where land will be protected for farming, the best locations for roads, malls, sewers, electrical lines, etc. |
stewardship | the ethical and moral framework that informs our actions |
sustainability | using resources in a way where solutions are economically feasible, socially desirable and ecologically important; meets human needs while preserving the environment |
science | the basis for our understanding of how the world works and how human systems interact with it |
conservation | the sensible and careful use of natural resources, so that pollution and waste are minimized |
composting | using worms, bacteria, and fungi to decompose organic waste such as food scraps and yard trimmings |
recycling | collecting and sorting materials that can be reprocessed or remanufactured instead of throwing them away |
compost | organic material that can be used as a soil addition or as a main source to grow plants |
