Term | Definition |
Mineral | A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that is solid and inorganic representable by a chemical formula, usually abiogenic, and has an ordered atomic structure. |
Rock | The solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets, exposed on the surface or underlying the soil or oceans. |
Hardness | The quality or condition of being hard. |
Cleavage | The splitting of rocks or crystals in a preferred plane or direction. |
Luster | The state or quality of shining by reflecting light; glitter, sparkle, sheen, or gloss. |
Streak | The colour of a mineral when powdered and observed against an unglazed white porcelain plate. |
Crystal Form | The regular and repeated three-dimensional arrangement of atoms or ions in a crystal. |
Silicate Minerals | They are classified based on the structure of their silicate group which contain different ratios of silicon and oxygen. |
Nonsilicates | Lacking silicon. |
Rock Cycle | An idealized cycle of processes undergone by rocks in the earth's crust, involving igneous intrusion, uplift, erosion, transportation, deposition as sedimentary rock, metamorphism, remelting, and further igneous intrusion. |
Igneous Rocks | Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. |
Sedimentary Rocks | Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. |
Metamorphic Rocks | Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". |
