Term | Definition |
phloem | vascular tissue through which food moves. |
xylem | water and minerals travel in this vascular tissue. |
pollen | tiny structures that contain the cells that will later become sperm cells. |
seed | structure that contains a young plant inside a protective covering. |
embryo | the young plant that develops from the zygote (fertilized egg.) |
cotyledons | in all seeds, the embryo has one or more of these seed leaves. |
germination | occurs when the embryo begins to grow again and pushes out of the seed. (begins when the seed absorbs water from the environment.) |
root cap | protects the root form injury from rocks as the root grows through the soil. |
cambium | layer of cells which divide to produce new phloem and xylem. |
transpiration | the process by which water evaporates from a plant's leaves. |
