Term | Definition |
pressure | The force pushing on a surface divided by the area of that surface. |
Boyle's Law | A principle that describes the relationship between the pressure and the volume of a gas at a constant temperature. |
Charle's Law | A principle that describes the relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas at a constant pressure. |
Nucleus | The central core of an atom containing protons and usually neutrons. |
Atom | The basic particle from which all elements are made. |
Electron | A tiny, negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus of an atom. |
Mass number | The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. |
Proton | A small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the in the nucleus of an atom. |
Model | A diagram, a mental picture, a mathematical statement, or an object that helps explain ideas about the natural world. |
Neutron | A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge. |
Isotope | An atom with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons from other atoms of the same element |
Atomic Mass | The average mass of all the isotopes of an element. |
Periodic Table | A chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties. |
Period | A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table. |
Group | Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also called family. |
Chemical Symbol | A one or two letter representation of an element. |
Alkali Metal | An element in Group 1 of the periodic table. |
Alkaline Earth Metal | An element in Group 2 of the periodic table. |
Halogen | An element found in Group 17 of the periodic table. |
Noble Gas | An element in Group 18 of the periodic table. |
Metalloid | An element that has some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals. |
Transition Metals | One of the metals in Groups 3 through 12 of the periodic Table. |
