Physical Property | a property that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing what the object is made of |
Measuring | developing and using appropriate units of measurement for length, area, mass, volume, time, weight and temperature |
Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
Meter | a metric unit to measure length (height from the floor to a doorknob) |
Millimeter | a metric unit to measure length (1,000 mm = 1 m) (the width of a pencil lead) |
Centimeter | a metric unit to measure length (100 cm = 1 m) (th e width of a little finger) |
Decimeter | a metric unit to measure length (10 dm = 1 m) (length of a new crayon) |
Kilometer | a metric unit to measure length (1,000 m = 1 km) (distance from school to the grocery store) |
Gram | a metric unit to measure mass (mass of a large paper clip) |

Volume | amount of space that matter takes up |
Capacity | the maximum volume of a container |
Liter | a metric unit to measure volume (volume of liquid in half of a large soda bottle) |
Milliliter | a metric unit to measure volume (1,000 mL = 1 L) (volume of liquid in 2-3 water drops |
Displacement | method for finding volume of objects with irregular shapes (such as a rock) |
Magnetism | the pushing or pulling force between the poles of magnets |
Sink | an object falls to the bottom in water |
Float | an object sits on top of water |
Solid | matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space |
Liquid | matter that takes the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space |
Gas | matter that has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space |
Temperature | the measure of the warmth or coldness of an object |
Celsius | a metric unit to measure temperature |
Evaporation | the process of changing a liquid into a gas |
Condensation | the process of changing a gas into a liquid |
Mixture | a combination of two or more different kinds of matter, each of which keeps its own physical properties |
Solution | a mixture in which the particles of different kinds of matter are mixed evenly with each other |
Dissolve | to make a solution of, such as salt in water |
Solubility | a measure of the amount of a material that will dissolve in another material |
Salinity | the amount of salt dissolved in water |
