Term | Definition |
Seismic Waves | a wave of energy that is generated by an earthquake or other earth vibration and that travels within the earth or along its surface. |
Pressure | the exertion of force upon a surface by an object, fluid, etc., in contact with it: |
Crust | the outer layer of the earth, about 22 miles (35 km) deep under the continents |
Basalt | the dark, dense igneous rock of a lava flow or minor intrusion, composed essentially of labradorite and pyroxene and often displaying a columnar structure. |
Granite | a coarse-grained igneous rock composed chiefly of orthoclase and albite feldspars and of quartz, usually with lesser amounts of one or more other minerals, as mica, hornblende, or augite |
Mantle | the portion of the earth, about 1800 miles(2900 km) thick, between the crust and the core. |
Lithosphere | the crust and upper mantle of the earth |
Asthenosphere | the region below the lithosphere, variously estimated as being from fifty to several hundred miles (eighty-five to several hundred kilometers) thick |
Outer Core | The core that has molten rock as its comosition and is the third closet to the surface. |
Inner Core | The final layer in the earth. It contains extreme heat and pressure. Its compisition is Iron and Nickel. |
