adaptation | an inherited trait that increases an organisms chance of survival and reproduction in a certain enviorment. |
biotic factors | the living parts of an ecosystem, the animals, plants and microorganisms. |
coevolution | when two or more species evolve in response to each other. Examples: between predator and prey |
commensalism | a relationship in which one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped such as the interaction between remoras and sharks. |
community | a group of interacting populations of different species. |
competition | occurs when two or more organisms of the same or different species attempt to use the same limited resource. Ex: 2 plants competing for limited sunlight. |
ecosystem | incudes all the different organisms living in a certain area along with their physical environment. |
evolution | a change in the genetic characteristics of populations from one generation to the next is known as evolution |
extinction | the irreversible disappearance of a population or a species |
habitat | the actual place an organism lives |
host | the organism the parasite takes its nourishment from is called the host |
mutualism | a cooperative partnership between two species in which both species benefit. |
natural selection | Darwin used natural selection to describe the Darwin used the term natural selection to describe the unequal survival and reproduction that results form the presence or absence of particular traits. |
niche | way of life |
organism | one individual living thing |
parasites | organisms that live in or on another organism and feed on it without immediately killing it. |
parasitism | the relationship between the parasite and its host |
population | a group of individuals of the same species living in a particular place. |
predation | one organism kills and eats another organism. |
predator | the one that does the eating |
prey | the organism that is eaten |
