Term | Definition |
Observation | Noticing something in the natural world. |
Question | When something that you observe doesn't make sense. |
Hypothesis | A prediction about future events based on what you know. Usually an "if"/"then" statement. |
Method/Procedure | The steps you follow to complete an experiment. |
Variable | Something that changes or varies. |
Independent variable (IV) | part of the experiment that is changed intentionally by the scientist |
Dependent variable (DV) | part of the experiment that is changed BECAUSE OF the Independent variable. |
Control | part of the experiment that remains unchanged from how it occurs naturally |
Constants | parts of the experiment that are the SAME for all variables |
Results | The data that is collected after running the experiment. |
Qualitative data | uses words and is based on observation and interview |
Quantitative data | uses numbers and is based on survey, data collection, and measurements |
Conclusion | an statement on whether the hypothesis was correct or not and an explanation of the results. Includes sources of error. |
Validity | the experiment can be repeated and produce the same results |
