Term | Definition |
Civil Rights | rights that every person should have regardless of race, religion, or gender |
Jim Crow Laws | Laws that discriminated against African Americans by not allowing them to use the same facilities as white Americans |
Boycott | to refuse to buy, use, or participate in something as a form of protest |
Racism | The belief that some races are better than others or to treat people poorly because of their race or skin color |
Freedom Ride | a ride made by civil rights workers through the southern United States to see if public facilities are desegragated |
Desegregation | Allowing people from different races to use the same facilities |
discrimination | unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups |
sit-in | A protest in which people sit in a certain place and refuse to leave until they are given what they want |
prejudice | To form a judgement or opinion about a group of people without reason or knowledge of the group |
segregation | A policy that forced people of different races to stay separated |
Constitutional Rights | Rights guaranteed to everyone who is a citizen of the United States |
